Street Canvas

“A picture’s worth 1000 words”

This is was I think artist have in mind while they put up their art, either on walls, paper, bodies, or canvases, or on whatever you can show a picture on. Art is creation of a new idea from an artist. Expression! That’s what it is. Art is language of the soul. And in the city of L.A you can find a lot of soul. This means you can find a lot of street art out and about in the streets of the city of angles. When I walk down the street and I look at a blank wall, I always say to myself why can’t there be a nice artistic picture up on the wall? And I think it’s because the higher authority wants to keep the civilians oblivious and blank like the walls all around this city. Street artist give people something to look at and something to have feelings about. I really enjoy activist street art. I really like how an artist can show a concept of society and show what’s wrong with the society through their art. Street artist help the people realize that beauty can be anywhere and that you can make something beautiful with just some color and imagination. What would you draw?

Bansky is an anonymous london street artist leaving his art all over Los Angeles. This artist has been nominated an Academy award for his film”exit through the gift shop”, but the reaction from his film grab more fans of his street art and to find his work for themselves. People want to see the mastermind behind his genius work he leaves around because he is just a dark shadow in his film. Although we know he will remain anonymous people in Los Angeles take there time to look for his art in random alleys, parking lots in beverly hills, dirt lots, billboards and random spots by the freeway. His purpose is not to make money, but to allow people to look outside the box, his art work consist of using stencils he made because its fast to spray tag places, spray can, paints, and objects that may appear like it’s useless but then he creates some kind of twisted art that has people thinking what was this artist thinking, and woahing them with his creativity and unique style of urban art. He is one of my favorite street artist who has made a bang coming to Los Angeles. I’ve seen his work in LA Street Artwork in downtown Los Angeles, and it is truly something i have never seen before and was awed at such unique of style that made me keep looking at his work in detail.

A french urban artist, who leaves his art around streets in 31 different countries, has left Los Angeles ‘invaded’. His purpose is to invaded the world with his tiled character of an invader on walls outside. His reasoning being is that tile is material for outside, so the french artist Invader explains. He has taken his street art into a whole other level. He has recreated street art by having binary codes in his art, but the way you can unlock the code and find the real meaning is with your iphones. This has people amazed as he develops street art and introducing it the world of technology. He continues to use the most popular phone which is the iphone to grab these users  to download apps for his arts purpose to be revealed. People in Los Angeles download an application called i-matrix (bee tagg), it translate what his real meaning behind his invaders character. The meaning after using the iphone application i-matrix is “you have been invaded”. I think this is why people find Invader such a professional street artist and has become well known because he leaves his streets art in the world of technology and in the streets. Peoples reaction to his street art has them playing i spy invader here and there. People take time from there everyday life and stop and pauses if they have found the infamous artwork Invader leaves around in cities such as london, Los Angeles, France, Barcelona, Rome, Berlin, San Diego, Bonn, Newcastle, Vienna and much more. He doesn’t only leave one two or three invaders but takes three weeks in each city, and taking his time but yet trying to incorporate as much street art into each city as he is spending his time there working hard to disturb his art.

This is really cool, I had no idea that an artist was leaving behind space invaders and you can scan them with an iPhone app. I really liked how each place the artist leaves a space invader; there is actually some meaning behind it. This actually makes the viewer really curious to go and check out what the meaning behind the space invader and its placement. This is a great way to involve the public in street art, not only is this cool but it really does bring a community together. This art evokes the public’s interest to the street art, and helps show that not all street art is negative. But instead it’s a way for some artists to express themselves .Not only is artist introducing the world of a new type of street art, but he is also introducing the use of technology in street art. This makes me want to go out into the city, and look for all the space invaders in Los Angeles. This kind of street art also pushes the viewers to travel and see the world. Street Art comes in a variety of styles, and there is no set style to it.

Pop Art is a form of remixing something and making it your own. Andy Warhol did allot of remixing and was really successful. He is known for the famous Campbells Tomato Soup silk screen. He took an ordinary household can food and turned it into a pop symbol. By repeating it in different color schemes until it became boring. Most of the street art we see now are examples of remixing. Thanks to Andy Warhol he stimulated many minds of artist and helped create a new branch of graffiti named Wheat Pasting. Mainstream artist like OBEY are big in Wheat Pasting and remixing. He took an Andrew the giant picture from a magazine and stenciled it out to make it his own.  Both Andy Warhol and OBEY were sick of the media bombarding images to us every day that they decided to fight back. OBEY and other artist took one step further and made their own remixes to post all over the city. Not only is remixing a form of propaganda but also a form of beatification. To an artist a old broken down car can be a piece of work. With the help of remixing rundown neighborhoods can be turn into beautiful areas to live in.

Interesting how pop art remixes something you see everyday, into a different colored image or something else. The Campbell soup can was a good example of what pop art is. When you gave an example of Obeys wheat pasting, I thought of the Obama hope poster. I remember how the poster was everywhere on the internet, when the 2008 election was occurring. It really helped bring attention to the matter that the United States may have its first African American president. And wheat pasting is a form of propaganda, a way an artist can express there feelings about a situation in the world. Another example I saw of wheat pasting was the Kony 2012 campaign; I saw cars painted with the Kony 2012 trying to bring attention about this matter. I can see why wheat pasting has become so important in todays society, it helps bring attention to issues that the media doesn’t focus on. Wheat pasting also helps communicate to a younger audience who likes this type of art; the colors grab the viewer’s attention so they can get interested about some of the issues. Remixing can bring neighborhoods together, making it a better place for the people to live in.

Graffiti is a form of art that’s stigmatize in society but its slowly being accepted in some parts of the world like Chile and Spain. When people think of graffiti they automatically think of gangs related vandalism. Sadly even though that’s just a small surface, graffiti is more than that. Graffiti is a word that categorizes all the different forms of urban art that branched out of it. Some art is gang related and other art can be government related. Depending how you look at it graffiti can be both positive and negative thing. I like to call me self an ex street artist and I see how graffiti is being slowly accepted in society. Thanks to some of the mainstream artist like OBEY and Banksy people have a different view of graffiti. They see the power that art has for example, street art can send out a powerful message without using words. An example of that is the piece art below this post. It sends out the message of peace and tranquility is possible in any situation. The artist was able to send out this message without using any words. However, we are all going to have our own different opinion, and that’s the beauty of street art. I guess that’s what makes street art or graffiti so interesting. That fact that is so controversial makes so interesting and mysterious.

stacey’s comment:
I agree that street art is being looked at differently because of artist like obey and bansky. They are being more accepted into society and not looked as taboo now a days. I think time is changing and accepting different styles people express themselves because we are now looking to their side of their story where they come from, who they are, and why they do it.  But where does this photo take place? Is this street art from Los Angeles ? I really see the beauty street art has captured in this photo in such a sophisticated and elegant style, by it’s bold colors and religion being incorporated.

Looking at certain pieces of street art I have come to realize it expresses life, in a different point of view. Street art shows a space, which is interpreted in a different way by the artist. The artist is able to change a specific public area, into a space that he/she interpreted it to be. Allowing the public to interpret that piece of art, and use there imagination. Street art also is able to bring a community together; an example of this is Edgar Müller art. His art allows people to put themselves in the scene, and that allows the community to come together to view his street art. But street art can cause some controversies to, some of the most controversial urban street art disturbs people and they don’t understand the artist’s point of view. An example of controversial street art is, Blu an Italian street artist whose art looks disturbing to the public. The reason for this is the public isn’t able to understand his view of art, his street art shows images that isn’t easily understood by the public. Others examples of controversial street art is Shepard Fairey known for his obey brand art, Marc Jenkins for his sculpture art, and Faile street art. Each artists causes mixed feelings to there audience, which is some of these artists goals. The art above comes from Shepard Fairy, Obama poster hope which used in the presidency. This is a cool type of remix that was taken by a picture of president Obama and blended with street art.

I’ve seen this type of street art around me every in Los Angeles, it has been a symbol that has been heard. It give streeet are a voice, and slowly making it’s way to be a strategy of using to get younger viewers attention. This street art style has impacted many of the young audience attention because it’s trendy, cool, and people want to see more of it. I say this because i see this technique being use to capture my attention, my friends from high school, and my peers in college. Street are is the modern art form of art and is found to be catching many peoples attention.  I like this message of hope being conveyed into the new president. It’s strong message is reaching to young adult, and I believe changing the mentally of young minorities. Not only is the message hop but also the president face, which has to like street art being accepted, our president who is a minority is the possibility of anything can happen as long as you put your mind to it.  The public has really engage because we see more art being created

Street art is a visual art, which is usually displayed in a public space. So many people can view and get a sense of the different culture in that space. There are different types of street art, which includes graffiti, sculpture, stencil, sticker art, wheatpasting, and street poster art. One well-known street artist is Edgar Müeller a street artists who uses the streets as a canvas and, focuses on 3D street paintings. He paints over large areas of urban public life and gives them a new appearance, challenging the perceptions of people that pass by. The people that are observing the art, becomes part of the new scenery of his street art. Edgar Müller shows with his art, that not all street art isn’t bad for the community. Instead his street art brings the community together, allowing them to use there imagination and have fun viewing his art. His art allows people to put themselves in the scene of his painting, and get a new perception of the scene. The picture above is an example of Edgar Müller street art; the piece is called “Lava Burst” it was painted in Germany August 2008. This painting shows a apocalyptic scene, which allows people to perceive a scene in a certain way.
